Under Christ’s Feet

Acts 1:1-11

From chapter 1 through to 5 in the book of Acts, Luke deals with the birth of the Christian church. In chapter 1 he covers the period from Jesus' crucifixion leading up to the Day of Pentecost (50 days from the first Sunday after the Passover). After a brief introduction in verses 1-5, Luke narrates the ascension in verses 6-11, and then the events in the upper room prior to the day of Pentecost.

Acts16:6-15

In our passage today Lukecommences his account of the evangelization of the Aegean shores, from Acts 16 through 19. Evangelization : a fancy church word thatsimply means to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to yourneighbors, even if you can’t pronounce the name of the town theylive in.

He first recounts the call of the man from Macedonia in verses 6-10, and then the conversion of Lydia in verses 11-15. Think of conversion as persuading someone to repent and change to a godly life.

Acts 11:1-18

For Luke, the movement of the gospel toward the Gentiles is a significant event and so he takes time to show that it is not only authorized by the Jerusalem church, but by God himself. Our passage today records Peter's defense, before the Jerusalem church, for the baptism of Cornelius and his family.

Cornelius was a roman centurion who believed in the God of Israel. The news of the Messiah made him welcome the message Peter proclaimed. Cornelius became the first Gentile to be baptized with his family and admitted into the Church.
